Jamestown and Williamsburg

We spent the morning at Jamestown Settlement. The museum starts with a movie about the history of Jamestown. Next, there is a huge indoor exhibit. After that, there is an outdoor interactive exhibit. The outdoor exhibit consists of recreations of a Powhatan Indian village, the Jamestown fort and the ships that were used to get to the New Land. It was all so good! The most interesting thing I learned there was the history of the first African slaves.

I wasn’t able to take photos inside. But I got plenty outside. We started with the Powhatan Village. Walking through the wigwams reminded me of the small model we made last year for school.  It was so neat to see one in person.

Next, we went to the Jamestown fort. This isn’t the actual site of the original settlement. The original site is one mile away.

The first year was brutal for the colonists. The vast majority died. Eventually they recovered and started to build structures like this, inside the fort.

Some of the structures had elaborate furnishings and some had more primitive ones.

A metal worker fitted Clark with some chain mail to protect him from the Indians’ arrows.

Next, everyone had to try on some armor.

Including the girls...

After that, we learned about the colonists’ weapons.

The kids got to hold a real sword.

Then we watched a musket get fired.

There was one church in the fort.

The ships were amazing! Susan Constant was the largest one.

Then there was Godspeed and Discovery.

We finished up at Jamestown around lunch. So we went to lunch and then we headed for Williamsburg.

I’ll be totally honest, Jason and the kids were not thrilled about going to Williamsburg. It was very hot and they were tired of walking. But, I had to see Williamsburg since we were so close! They made it through half of the town then they all bailed out on me except for Brody. So Brody and I finished walking around the town together.

I am so glad I didn’t purchase tickets to Williamsburg this time. Our kids aren’t ready for it yet. Maybe when they’re a little older and when it’s a little cooler outside.
